Planting & Care
1. Planting: When it’s time to plant your Red Prince, simply choose an area with full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily) and well-drained soil – it’s adaptable to nearly any type, as long as there’s no standing water, and it will adapt to some shade. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate your plant’s roots, place your tree and back fill the soil and then water to settle the roots.
2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season, or about once per week. You may need to water more often during times of extreme heat. But if you’re not sure when to water, however, simply check the soil about 2 to 3 inches down – if the soil is dry here, it’s time to water.
3. Pruning: Pruning is not necessary for your Red Prince – simply space your plantings to allow your Weigela to grow naturally. If you’re looking for a more formal appearance, prune annually after the second flowering period (generally, the end of summer).
4. Fertilizer: Fertilize with a slow-release solution before new growth begins in the spring.
